Meet George, the shy guy of the sanctuary. George is a senior schnauzer who keeps to himself. He is so gentle and quiet; however, when you seek him out, he loves to be petted.
This lovable lab is Ellie Mae. She is such a gentle giant who loves everyone. We think Ellie Mae is between 12 and 14 years old. You will instantly fall in love with Ellie Mae as soon as you meet her.
This big boy is Buddy, a senior pointer mix. Buddy might be the one the sweetest, most gentle boy at the sanctaury. He loves to cuddle with the other dogs and nudges his way onto fully occupied beds. Buddy is also our resident chewer. Occassionally when we pick up all the bowls after feeding, we'll be missing one. When we go outside, we see Buddy has very quietly taken the bowl outside to use as his chew toy. Buddy has come so far since coming to rescue and we are grateful to have him.
We call this girl Zoey Poodle. Zoey loves to nap and sun bathe. If you visit the sanctuary, she will likely be stretched out on top of the couch in front of the front window. If you ask me, she is one of the smartest dogs in the house.
Toby is the newest member of the family and is currently staying in a temporary foster home until he is healthy enough to come to the sanctuary. Toby is estimated to be around 13 years old. This guy has lived all his life on a chain outdoors. He is very skinny and has a few health concerns we are monitoring, but overall he is a wonderful dog adapting to a new life. Toby will be at the sanctuary soon so we can all meet him.
Meet Miss Zoey... This sweet-as-can-be rat terrier is such a cuddler, but has a spunky side too. She wants so desparately to sleep with us at night and jumps right up. You would never know by the way she makes that jump that she is estimated to be 14 years old. Zoey came to us from the Carter Lake animal control officers who found her left behind in an abandoned house. I can't imagine leaving moving and leaving Zoey behind. She really is one of the perfect dogs here.
During head count when it comes to Sammie Jo you have to look under every blanket in the sanctuary. She is a true dachshund, loving to burrow under the covers in her little cubby. We are lucky that Sammie Jo is one of the few dogs we actually know her true birthday August 18, 2002 which makes her 13 year old. This sweet baby was brought into rescue in October 2013 after she was surrendered to the shelter. When you first meet Sammie Jo it takes a bit for her to get use to some new people but once she does she comes running every time you come to visit. Sammie Jo is very healthy for her age and is one of the doggies that do not take medication but she does have to eat high quality canned dog food. She has too much trouble trying to eat dry food.
The award for most playful at the sanctuary has to go to Jake, the 14 year old border collie. If you need a partner to play fetch with, Jake is your guy. He could play all day. Jake is the best of both worlds though as he also loves to come sit down by you and be petted. Jake is definitely an attention hog, but who wouldn't want to give him attention?
Even though Sammie is small in size he has no problem standing his ground and barking in the face of all the new dogs (which most are larger than Sammie) who come into the sanctuary. This Maltese definitely has spunk! But no worried a few minutes later Sammie is their best friend. Sammie is another dog we know his exact birthday, September 29, 2002, making him 12 years old. When Sammie’s owner dies he was brought to the sanctuary with Sophie in March 2015. The owner had no friends or relatives in a position to care for them. But no fear they have a new life at the sanctuary and are loved. Sammie currently takes eye drops and heart medicine, which costs approximately $45 per month.
This guy is about the cutest guy ever. Bubba is 13 and is full of life. He loves to be outside wandering the yard.
The big boy up front is Dakota, one of our two yellow labs running the sanctuary. Dakota is a really sweet boy and is super smart. He loves to laying on the couch with Ellie Mae (the big yellow lab in the back). Overall, Dakota is relatively healthy, with only a small tumor behind is eye and some arthritis in his front legs. He still acts like a puppy.
Another one of our cuties that came to us in April of 2015 as a owner surrender was Max who believe it or not is 17 years old!!! He doesn't look or act like he could be anywhere near that age. Max is a Schnauzer, Terrier mix who at first when he came to us was a little skeptical but now he fits right in!! He loves to walk around the yard and lay out in the sun watching over all the other doggies. If he has not seen you in awhile he coming looking for you checks on you and then goes on his way!
This is the little brother of all our sanctuary residents. Fred is only 6 to 7 years old. He came to the sanctuary with Zoey, the 16 year old black min pin mix. They were surrendered to the Midlands Humane Society after their owner also became homeless. We know that Fred would do great in a home, but we don't want to split up him and Zoey; and we love Fred!
This chucky boy is Ollie! He is one of several chihuahuas taking over the sanctuary. Ollie is younger, but suffers from heart failure. He is very shy at first, but is definitely warming up to his new life. He finally slept in bed with us the other night and was very cuddly. If you stop by the sanctuary, likely you'll find Ollie hanging out in the kenel, like the picture above. He just likes to check out the action of everyone else. Love him!
This beautiful girl is Casey. She came to our sanctuary on 4/21/2015 and is estimated to approximately 13 years old. Casey has such a calm demeanor until she knows its time to go for a walk. Then, Casey lets loose and gets vocal. She LOVES walks and the volunteers that give her walks.
If you are a kid and you come to visit us odds are the first dog you will goes toward is Huni, 11 year old Chihuahua mix who came to us from rescue on April 16th 2015. If you are sitting down odds are she will be at your feet staring at you as if to say “Hey you got a lap-PICK ME UP”. Who could resist this little monkey!
Another one of the dogs with a goofy smile is Kodi who’s one goal is to be right next to you wherever you are. Kodi came to us an owner surrender and was in desperate need of dental work. When all was said and done the vet ended up pulling 17 teeth! But that did not stop Kodi and in a few days he was up and running around with his siblings and you would never know the difference except for the cute tongue that is always sticking out!
This little cutie, Roxy, is our baby of the sanctuary at 8 years old. She came to us an owner surrender from the Human Society for having congestive heart failure. How could anyone give up this loveable dog. She like Abby is on daily meds. We try to sneak pills to the dogs in different thing and she is getting very wise when it comes to peanut butter and runs in the other direction because its not a treat its yucky meds! She stands her ground until you give in and she gets a hot dog! Roxy is full of spunk and would never know she was sick. Odds are if you sit on the couch before long she will jump up and be right next to you.
Meet Miss Shelby, the 12 year old cocker spaniel. Don't be fooled, this face looks all sweet and innocent, but she loves food and will countersurf with the best of them to reach your food. Other than this, Shelby is a true lover and is the best to lay with.
This Zoey has a few names at the sanctuary; however, ,most call her Zoey 4. Who knew Zoey was such a popular dog name. Zoey 4 is approximately 16 years old and came to us as her person lost her home and also went to a homeless shelter. Zoey 4 loves to eat even more than Shelby. She is one that you definitely don't want to stick your hand in front of her with food. For being 16, this girl has spunk. Just the other day, she was running through the yard like a puppy.
Harley and Bella
Harley and Bella are 2 peas in a pod. Bonded Siblings who you will never find one without the other, have found their furever home with us. Whether you are standing around (they jump up in the air to get your attention) or sitting on a chair, within minutes these two will jump in your lap. As for Bella, she will just cuddle up in your arms and you just better figure out how to do things while holding on to her because she will not be put down! When they are laying on one of the beds Harley watches over his sister with love.
Penny is a doxi mix that is new to the sanctuary. This is her "before" picture as she is currently at the vet to remove her cherry in her left eye. More "after" pictures coming soon.
Meet Riley, the 15 year old border collie. She is so sweet. Riley is in the beginning stages of losing both her hearing an vision so she does get started when she's unknowingly approached, but otherwise, this girl is a happy soul.
Look at this adorable little min-pin. Those ears crack me up every time I look her way.
Tigger is our little black doxi. He absolutely loves the couch - and occasionally loves cuddling with the other pups.
